What In The World Is CNC Woodworking?

CNC (Computer Numerical Control) technology has been around since the 1970s. Ever since its existence, it has been able to transform manufacturing into a faster and more efficient production line. Metal and big industries are not the only ones using this technology, CNC woodworking businesses are also using this automation process.

What is CNC technology?

In it simplest sense, CNC machines intend to replace manual work with automated processes and work together with other manufacturing processes. For example, manually drilling holes would take a while, imagine drilling in large numbers, it is likely that a person would experience fatigue and increase the possibility of human error in the manufacturing line.

CNC machines could reduce human-related errors and retain consistency, accuracy, and precision in their work pieces. Aside from that CNC could also reduce the amount of time spent on production, thus increasing productivity. Given these benefits, it is very likely that businessmen, from small businesses to large-scale woodwork businesses, will use CNC machines for their production.

How does it work?

CNC machines are programmed and controlled by software. The design that would be followed by the machine is used by the CAD module. It is the Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) that ensures that the movement of the motor or the machine is controlled.

Once the machine is already set up, using it would be easy. It could work for 24 hours straight or even for the entire year. What it would need is just an occasional break for its regular schedule of maintenance. Operators are trained with the software which would allow them to control the CNC equipment. The training is performed using a virtual game.

What can they do?

CNC machines have common characteristics: having an axis which could be programmed towards a specific direction of motion. A CNC machine is more complex if it has more axes. These axes would determine the motion of the machine which is important in the manufacturing process.

Additional features may be included in CNC woodworking equipment, like the automatic tool changer, spindle speed, and coolant. The automatic tool changer replaces the spindle automatically when needed. Coolants offer cooling and lubrication for the CNC machine.

The CNC woodworking equipment has a controller which would interpret the commands sent by the CNC program. The CNC program can be considered as an instruction set or the step-by-step procedure of the manufacturing process. In woodworking, the most common operation used would be routing, which is also drilling. There are CNC types of equipment that can have several tools and perform different tasks but uses one interface.

Its impact

The use of CNC machines in woodworking, it has improved methods of production and increased the number of workpieces finished without sacrificing their quality. Since the CNC woodworking equipment is precise and accurate, it could replicate 10,000 quality pieces.

CNC woodworking machines were able to provide ease in production and manufacturing. Quality was replicated in each product, thus, increasing customer satisfaction.

These days, as in all the other fields of interest, CNC woodworking still has some areas where manufacturers, woodworking professionals, hobbyists and amateurs may only have some scant knowledge of, or perhaps may not have tried them, or have only heard about them.

The following are a few random tips, information bits, techniques and other aspects in CNC woodworking (routing, machining, drilling, and others) that had only been uncovered recently.

Inputting

Some CNC woodworking programs have to be manually inputted into the machine control. Writing small sub-programs (others call them templates) will save you some sizeable time (and keystroke efforts), most especially on codes that are repeated over and over.

Cutting a precise angle

If you need to cut a precise angle on the material, do the set on the machine itself using a protractor. Then, write a program to follow the angle with an indicator. Done this way, the part can be bumped around while the machine is doing the indicating part.

Stock cutting

The standard cutting jobs for panel boards are usually done by many 2-D panel cutting programs. Wastage, however, becomes a problem especially if the job is big enough.

Many pros would turn to popular 2-D panel cutting programs to ensure optimization of the materials used and to lessen the discards. Today, many pros and enthusiasts have now known that less expensive but dedicated 1-D stock cutting programs abound almost everywhere in the market.

Twins

Mirror images are perfect when creating right and left-hand parts. Experts, however, warned to watch it out when machining the mirrored part. If the first part was programmed using G41 and climb milling, machining the mirrored part needs at least an extra 0.01 to the rough cutter.

The reason is that on the mirrored part you will be doing conventional milling. This is where the cutter tends to go into the finished surface.

Machining both ends

Sometimes, a job requires you to machine both ends of a part held on a vise and you also need to try using one of the tools for the stop. Simply take ½ of the tool’s diameter and add 1/16 and incorporate this into the program.

You can then bump the part against the tool, press the cycle start button, and the tool/stop moves out of the way.

Freebies

These days, woodworking software freebies are all over. They include calculators for computing board feet, wood movements, wood selection, moisture content, drawer sizing, shelf sag rates, cost estimates, and many others downloadable for free.

There are programs that create cut lists for doors, drawers, cabinets, furniture pieces, etc. There are many free design programs, too, for wood shops and cabinets, although there are not very many with regards to full-featured free CAD application.

CAD for woodworking

Computer-Aided Design (CAD) is the software needed to design such objects as disparate as a piece of furniture or the space shuttle. The program provides capabilities like zooming, rotating, copying, stretching and so many other commands.

Some have template libraries as well as applications for shading, texturing, and simulated 3-D.

Indeed, CNC Woodworking had really come a long way since the early days of squiggly pen and paper renditions of jobs and projects.

Baby Birth Announcement Wall Plaque with Stats.

This project was a lot of fun to make right from the design stage through to the finishing process because there is nothing like this available on the internet or in stores.  If you know someone that is expecting a baby or get it for a birthday present, this is the item that will make you stand out.

Natural wood design so parents can paint it as they wish according to gender, room colors, design, etc..  Painting is available with an upcharge.  But I believe this wall plaque would be a great

project for any parent to tackle with their own flare.

Check my store for order details.

Compared to the big guns, it’s a totally different perspective when a smaller guy intends to acquire some CNC woodworking equipment. Their sets of consideration are poles apart. From a small guy’s perspective, there are a lot of questions that need to be answered correctly.

Should one choose a dedicated machine or some multi-function model? What can the performance be like? Can the machine justify its price?

The underlying aspect of all these questions is the fact that the smaller guy most likely has a smaller budget and naturally fidgety.

Commitment

However, the first consideration when thinking of buying a CNC machine is a simple commitment. This mindset will go a long way in dealing with the machine and the people who will deal with it.

Consider the following factors that are needed to be met — time to learn the machine’s software, time to learn proper dust collection and hold-down techniques, and time to train new employees.

The CNC machine can only do what its operators want it to. While the CNC tool can do the tasks more accurately than humans, it still needs regular maintenance and an operator committed enough to learn everything about it.

Patience

Another attitude to help you through all this is patience. You and your people will need much of it when they bring in the CNC machine into your shop. Expect a lot of growing pains for everybody involved.

For one thing, understanding new technology and its processes cannot be successfully put into operations in just one or two days. On hindsight, it would then be good to partner with a company that has experts to help your people.

Technical help

Before signing into the dotted line, look first into your supplier’s help to your people. Check on the quantity of training that the company will provide yours. Patience is needed in finding the right company, the perfect trainers, and the high level of enthusiasm from your people.

The high mark in the test of your patience is learning this new process and trusting your own decisions. Experts say “most small companies investing in their first CNC machine will start to gain that comfort level around the 90-day mark.”

CNC productivity

Being flexible, configurable and being repeatable can make the CNC raise and enhance its productivity in cell-based operations. The big advantage of a multi-function machine is reduced labor and processing time.

Choose a CNC model that is easy to set up, easy for all operators to understand and use, and straightforward enough to change over or configure for the next task.

Fears and facts

There is a baseless misconception among small shop owners that a machine not in operation all day is a wasted investment. Would a CNC machine be a good investment nevertheless?

Standard manufacturing concepts stated that machines should be operating at all times for maximum efficiency. That mindset was changed when the router they purchased became operational and produced in a few hours what their employees took two days to make.

Commitment and patience, and not just a leap of faith, are certainly needed for a small shop owner when trying to upgrade his business. CNC machines are just what he needs to be in step with today. Woodworking is never the same again.
